Survivors outreach
Cara runs the Sheffield Irish Survivors Outreach Service (SISOS). SISOS provides an information, advice and support service to people who, as children, lived in state-run institutions in the Republic of Ireland, and their families. It is a free and confidential service funded by the Department of Education in Ireland. Services include:
- information about the Redress Scheme and other legal proceedings
- help in applying for Irish records (school and medical), passports and birth certificates
- family tracing
- advice on welfare benefits and where to find money advice
- talking to people on your behalf
- help in getting counselling and other services
- help in applying to the Education Fund
- general support and information about the institutions covered by the Redress Act
- information and advice to other organisations.
SISOS holds a small, but growing, photographic archive of institutions, which anyone is welcome to come and look through (or add to). It also offers internet facilities for survivors and their families to help with family tracing and other research.
Please note:
Unfortunately SISOS in Sheffield will be closing at the end of the year 2008 as funding for this project will come to an end. The service will continue as normal in the meantime until the end of 2008.
